Slice asked:
Objective is to find a set of lost keys in two feet tall grass and weeds. Does a metal detector have enough range – reading seems to indicate that they only work within 6 inches or so. Anyone know of any another electronic device could be used to expediate such a search?

Metal detectors have to be quite close to the object you are looking for – at least, those available commercially do. I believe the miltary have some highly sophisticated devices, but they have highly sophisticated price tags as well.
You could always drag a magnet through the grass – if the magnet is strong enough it should pick up the keys.
