Can the police MAKE me walk through a metal detecting device? If so, which specific UK law enables this?

I am referring predominantly to the use of temporary “weapons” detecting equipment at rail/bus stations, shopping centres etc. I would appreciate answers from relevant law professionals, if possible. Please make reference to specific applicable laws. Thank you!
Usually, these detectors are at the exit to a Tube (Metro) station in London, so they can hardly imprison a person within the station. Interesting answers so far, though.

They can’t make you walk through the device, but they can deny you entry if you don’t. I doubt you will find a specific law on this.
I can tell you the premise behind it in the US is the interest of public safety has a higher priority than the interest of an individual person, I’m sure the UK has a similar view.

Only at airports they can actually force you to walk through it, it is some international law approved by the UNO or something, now at post offices and public places you can just walk out and not enter the building if you decide not to walk through one of those metal detectors.
