Metal Detecting Questions:
Are Old Gold and Silver Coins Pure?
Are coins from at least 100 years ago made of pure gold and silver? If not, are they simply gilded? What other metals were used if they are?
So let me tell you of my next possible wacky pursuit. I just watched a video of some people using a magnet to fish out WWII relics from a lake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNos9g1RHps
Could a magnet pic up gilded coins and jewelry?
Any advice is welcome. I know it’s silly but it’ll be fun (if I even get to try)
C’mon! Modern treasure hunting.
So my main question is whether or not a gold alloy coin would possibly be picked up by a powerful magnet.
No, my dad is a numismatist and they are only partly their pure elements. Gold is an element that isn’t very strong so they put in alloys.
