Hunter Land

Metal Detecting Questions:

Farmers and Hunters disagree on the most desirable population level, but where do ecologists fit in?

Hunters and preservationists may come together to push for more deer but disagree on bag limits and length of season. Farmers and hunters both want long hunting seasons and large bag limits, but disagree on what is the most desirable population level. Farmers who lease land to hunters might disagree with other farmers who use land more traditionally. Where do ecologists, who want balanced ecosystems, fit in?

Hopefully advising the policymakers in a thoughtful fashion. If you limit natural predation, hunting to maintain population levels short of a crisis is the only realistic alternative. I was taught in a wildlife management course long ago that failure to issue doe permits (due to a sentimental “don’t shoot Bambi’s mother” campaign) led to the notorious 1960′s Edwards Plateau whitetail dieoff that starved over a million deer to death when they stripped nearly all the vegetation. Texas never made that mistake again, and no one else should either.
