are gold panning and placer mining the same thing?

I’m doing a national history day assignment and I was doing research in wikipedia about gold panning and then wikipedia said about the history of placer mining. so is placer the same thing as gold panning? Thanks for reading!

gold panning is a type of placer mining. It is old-school and small scale. Placer mining simply refers to deposits that are not lode deposits (lode deposits being contained within a host rock, like a vein). Placer deposits used to be veins that are weathered (the mountain with the vein in it is completely washed away over millions of years) and transported, and concentrated by water.
