Metal Detecting Questions:

Table coating that will resist splashed machine oil?

Hi I have a small lathe that I am bolting to an old coffee table. I have an oil pan and a splash shield, but the table is raw wood. What would be a reasonable coating to put on the wood to resist oil and debris?

A good marine grade polyurethane should do the trick, about 3 coats.

Metal Detecting Questions:

Need help with a project on ” The Hobbit “?

I had to read ” The Hobbit ” over the summer and now that schools on, I must make a portfolio for it. I only need help with two pages, scrap book. I must create 1 scrap book page for Bilbo and 1 scrap book page for Gandalf, each page must have a minimum of 5 items is required on each page. Each item must be an item that would’ve been an important time on their journey. I also need to write a short discription under each item. So far I already have all of the items for Bilbo… ( the ring of course, maybe a small piece of spider web, his sword the ” Stinger “, gold, black fur from a wolf maybe ). I have some for Gandalf too but not nearly enough…. ( an eagle feather, maybe blue fabric from his robe and wooden fabric from his staff .

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping/answering :D !

I’d say pipeweed, since he smoked a lot. Grey fabric for his robe btw (Gandalf the Grey). His sword was called Glamdring, maybe something about that?

Drawing a blank as well on this one.

I have a Bounty Hunter. I bought it at Walmart about 10 years ago. I have found a ring buried in 3 inches of dirt.

In the Spring after the snow melts I will take it out again to see if people have dropped stuff over the winter months.

Metal Detecting Questions:

Metal detecting tips and tricks?

Ok so I’ve gone metal detecting 3 times now with my White’s Coinmaster and so far I’ve only found what I believe the MD community calls clad coins? I’ve found 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 1 nickel, and 8 pennies. The places I’ve detected are called Klineline Lake in Salmon Creek WA, Horseshoe Lake in Woodland WA and Battle Ground Lake, Battle Ground WA. I have yet to find any jewelry or rare and old coins which is the reason I started metal detecting to begin with and I haven’t found any of those. I’m slightly discouraged, oh I’ve also found a LOT of pull tabs. Am I doing something wrong? I’m also 20 so I have a long time to do this but I really want success and it seems to be eluding me. Any tips or tricks to find this jewelry and old coins I’m looking for? Thanks!

I’ve been metal detecting for awhile. I’m one of the younger guys though, but I still know a lot. Never give up! You have to keep trying and eventually you will find something good. If you want to find jewelry, go to beaches, ponds, playgrounds, etc. If you are looking for old coins, go to old parks, old houses, abandoned houses, etc. Sometimes you need to get permission to hunt places. Do your research, go onto your town’s recreation page, and they sometimes give you the years parks were constructed. Ask people if you can hunt in their yards, some people will tell you no, but there are a lot of nice people out there who will allow you to. Check out my metal detecting videos on YouTube and check out some of my finds. I don’t find a lot of nice stuff, but every know and then, I find something great! http://www.youtube.com/user/RecoveringRelics
Good luck and HH! (Happy Hunting)
